Free Guide for Athletes
Visualization That Actually Works When It Matters Most
A free 7-day protocol for athletes who want to stop visualizing winning and start rehearsing what elite performers actually do.
Built by a licensed sport psychologist. Used by athletes from high school through professional levels.

If you've been told to "just visualize winning"...
...and it made you more nervous, not less, you're not doing it wrong. You've just been given imagery tools that train the wrong brain system.
Most visualization advice tells you to picture outcomes. The research shows this backfires. Outcome-focused rehearsal trains your brain to treat competition as high-stakes threat, which tightens your body and shrinks your focus at exactly the moment you need both to open up.
There's a better way. It's backed by two decades of peer-reviewed sport psychology research. And you can start doing it in five minutes a day.
Inside the Freedom Visualization Protocol
Seven days. Five to eight minutes a day. One daily practice that builds on the last.
Day 1 — The Anchor. The one-phrase signal that settles your nervous system before every rehearsal.
Day 2 — Embodied Arrival. Why visualizing in performance posture changes what your brain encodes.
Day 3 — Your Environment. How context-rich rehearsal makes your practice actually transfer.
Day 4 — Process Over Outcome. The 80% rule and why elite athletes never rehearse the scoreboard.
Day 5 — The Full Emotional Truth. What most visualization gets wrong about nerves, doubt, and fatigue.
Day 6 — Adversity and Recovery. The 20% protocol that builds your nervous system's emergency response.
Day 7 — Championship Integration. The 8-minute competition-week protocol and the 30-second in-competition reset.
Every day includes a specific practice you can do today.
This guide is for you if:
You compete at a level that matters to you (high school, college, elite amateur, professional, or serious recreational)
You've had moments where your practice performance didn't show up in competition
You're tired of generic "mental toughness" advice that doesn't hold up under pressure
You want a research-backed protocol, not a motivational pep talk
You're willing to do the work. Five minutes a day, for seven days.
If that's you, the guide will deliver.
This isn't another "picture yourself winning" guide.
This protocol is built on two research traditions most visualization content ignores.
The PETTLEP model (Holmes & Collins, 2001) shows that imagery works best when it matches the body position, environment, timing, and emotion of real performance. Couch visualization doesn't cut it.
Mindfulness-acceptance-commitment research (Gardner & Moore, 2012; Kaufman et al., 2018) shows that present-moment focus outperforms outcome-focused rehearsal for reducing anxiety and enhancing flow. Especially under pressure.
The Freedom Visualization Protocol takes both and makes them practical.
In my race I was able to stay focused in the moment and really felt gratitude for being out there.

Because I've seen those adversity moments in my head and rehearsed how to handle them I'm more confident in my ability to handle them in the game.

About Dr. Trent Claypool
I'm a licensed sport psychologist, a former nationally ranked competitive swimmer, and the founder of Summit Sport Psychology in Monument, Colorado.
I built this guide because I spent years chasing performance the way most athletes do — tight, outcome-focused, afraid of failure. It nearly killed my love of the sport.
The athletes I work with now don't compete harder than their competition. They compete freer. This guide is the first step toward that shift.
15+ years of clinical experience. Several of the NCAA teams with which I work are perennial national contenders. This is the same system that has proven successful time and time again and I'm excited to be sharing it with you!
